Performance

"It's not just what you say, it's how you say it."

Anyone can play the sheet music or chords on the page in front of them, but what makes it an interpretation personal to you is the styling, the finishing touches and tweaks, and the personality you yourself give the music.

TEM (Taukay Edizioni Musicale) is a world famous Italian contemporary arts house. It can count annual composition competitions, live performances, interpretations, and song and dance amongst the many incredible things it does.

In 2008, whilst on the verge of completing my postgraduate degree in Music for Film and TV, I entered the competition Frammentazioni ("Fragments") on a whim. The brief was to write a piece of music of exactly 60 seconds in duration, using extended performance techniques for an instrument of your choice.

Luckily 3 years prior to this, I had written a series of 6 short pieces for solo clarinet, exactly in this vein, so I submitted the first one in the series "Propagation I", which exploited a technique called multiphonics, for solo clarinet.

The results were beyond my expectations - mine was one of 60 chosen from a massive 734 entries. These would be 'stitched together' to create a 60x60 musical tapestry, a one hour long concert underpinning a live interpretative performance. This was premiered at the San Giorgio Theatre in Udine on 11th October 2008.
